Cross-cultural training on the field. Great Commission living in action.
Why is a global perspective important in this day and age? While that’s a broad topic, a simple answer would be that the world is at our doorstep, and we have been commissioned by Jesus Christ to reach it with the Gospel.
At Northland, we’re all about Great Commission living. It may be that our graduates will serve in the midst of an unreached people group or that they will be active participants in a support network back home. No matter where God may lead them, students benefit from training and experiences that take them beyond theory. What a benefit to actually see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the world that belongs to the Ecuadorian Quichua mountain people, the francophone urbanites of Montreal, or the Mukhuwa tribesmen of Mozambique!
One can only imagine what could happen if each Northland graduate were to gain a global perspective by participating in a program where he or she engaged another culture for a significant length of time. Would the missions programs of our churches be infused with new energy? By capturing the pioneering spirit of veteran missionaries, would missionary recruits be better prepared? the flow of new candidates be increased? and new fields be opened?
Hands-On Missions training While Continuing Your Studies
Northland’s GO Study Abroad program is designed to allow students to spend one semester of their university experience in hands-on ministry in a cross-cultural setting while maintaining the sequence of their academic program. The GSA program, which extends for the normal length of a semester, is a unique blend of internship training combined with Northland Online courses. The internship portion of this program provides for cross-cultural ministry involvement, mentoring, and evaluation by the missionary who lives on the field. The online course work adds additional credits (the number of credits may vary) to the student’s load, providing the needed classes for the student to continue his or her program of study while on the field.
Brief History of Go Study Abroad
GO Study Abroad launched in the fall of 2009 with five pilot students studying in France, Zambia, Chile, Australia, and China. Now in its sixth semester, GO Study Abroad has sent thirty-seven students to twenty-three countries.
